OntoWorld.org is a semantic-enabled knowledge portal, developed by the Institute AIFB, University of Karlsruhe, to showcase the potential and benefits of semantic technologies like ontologies on the web.
In general, there are a set of collaborating semantic portals connected to the central OntoWorld.org portal. Each semantic portal can run independently but truly benefits are achieved by the collaboration mechanism: Each semantic portal has partly knowledge about a domain or an application, by querying other semantic portals a composed view can be generated on the fly.
Why several portals and not just one? The answer is simple: performance and scalability are achieved by the right technology at hand. Since, different requirements exist for different applications and domains. Exemplary, a huge publication server requires different storage capabilities as a news or community portal. Then, combining e.g. knowledge about publications with background information about projects, persons etc. generates a new view which provides complex knowledge by just one click.
Just try it out! Create an account easily by registering to OntoWorld. You can test the features and collaborate with others. As registered user, you can submit news, blogs and much more.
What technlogy or software is used? We used our own developed semantic portal software to build OntoWorld.org. An overview is given in the technology part.
